Parent Field Day Promotes Health and Wellness
Letters of invitation left the Colleton County School District Title I Office on Valentine’s Day headed for doctor’s offices, government agencies, gyms, and other Colleton residents. Why? The school district’s Parent Involvement Coordinator explains, “We want to give everyone in Colleton County an opportunity to support the health and wellness of parents and students in Colleton County. Our office is sponsoring a District Parent Field Day to remind everyone that physical and financial wellness starts with the choices we make at home.”
Simmons is partnering with Melissa Buckner, Director of Eat Smart Move More Colleton County, to give parents of students in grades K-8 the opportunity to participate in relay races, dance contests, healthy-cooking and shopping demonstrations, and receive free health screenings. “We mailed out over 170 invitations asking the health community to come to Colleton County Middle School on April 14th and provide simple health screenings for free to parents and children,” says Simmons. The letter encourages doctors and health-related businesses to take the blood pressure, pulse, posture, and lung capacity of the community – simple tests that can indicate problems - while there is still time for diet and exercise to prevent or cure high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, and obesity.
Eat Smart Move More Colleton County will provide lessons on healthy cooking and how to save money while shopping for healthy meals. There will also be opportunities for parents and children to sign up for regular check-ups and free summer activities at the library, the arts council, and other community organizations. Participants can also take part in a wellness themed game show or a Zumba class. Local banks and insurance agents will provide information on how to plan for health and education related expenses and keep kids safe. According to Simmons, “One of the best ways to save money is to maintain a checking account, have direct deposit, and not get overdrawn. You can save enough on NSF or check-cashing fees to cover your healthcare deductible, in some cases.”
“With the community’s help, we’ll have a wonderful time and be able to offer lunch for all! Parent Field Day prepares everyone for summer the way the Back-2-School bash will get everyone ready to come back to school,” says Simmons. Parents and children are not required to register, just drop in at the Colleton County Middle School Track and Gym on Saturday April 14th anytime between 10am and 2pm. Any business can register to provide services or donate food and supplies by calling 782-4522 x 3 or CLICKING HERE
