We have Partnered with First Book and The Reading Warehouse!
FirstBook.org FirstBook provides our Title I Schools with books at a significant discount - FREE! We pay the shipping of about .45 per book and when you come to one of our Title I Schools or the Title I Office, Colleton County School District Parents receive FREE BOOKS to take home to students, keep, and read whenever you want!
We recommend students read any book they like at least 20 minutes a day - 5 minutes here or there can really add up - so share these books, talk about them, ask questions that get kids to explain WHY they like a book. Here are some things they might say: characters, plot, writing style, dialog, descriptions of places, people, or events, new vocabulary. Ask them for details, have them summarize the book or ask if they would recommend it to you or another child. They can even come up with their own illustrations - just keep them reading and talking about the book! Regular reading is proven to increase overall reading comprehension and boost standardized test scores! |
The Reading WarehousePlease support this local business who provides books at a significant discount to our program and lets us come pick what we want from their Charleston, SC warehouse! Visit them online at www.readingwarehouse.com and look at their wide selection of books for less than most retailers.
For two years they have provided a variety of non-fiction books that help parents answer questions kids have and spur an interest in math, chemistry, biology, history, nature, biographies, or build reading skills through leveled/easy readers. Let your kid's imagination run wild and build their mental muscles with informational texts in a variety of formats. Ask them if they are reading a true story, if there is evidence for what the author says, if there are drawings or photographs, an index or glossary, and how they could learn more about the topic or people in the book. Let your kids build their own personal library and learn to love books! Non-fiction, or informational text, is an increasing component of instruction under Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Try reading the newspaper every day and adding closed captioning to your children's TV programs! |
